How to introduce foul mouthed, drug peddling, racist AI into your classroom... today. There has been lots of interesting discussion around AI guardrails, ethical concerns, output, etc. The truth is that the majority of platforms aren't implementing stringent moderation oversight into their tools, and even if they were, automated oversight is fallible. Even if you check every input and output to the AI systems, you won't catch them all. But this post isn't about organizational steps. It's about how you position AI. This isn't a guide for implementation its a provocation for thought. 𝐅𝐚𝐜𝐭: Bias and racism exist in the world, in language and in AI systems 𝐅𝐚𝐜𝐭: Commercial AI systems are intentionally align to broadly acceptable social and political norms 𝐅𝐚𝐜𝐭: The most ubiquitous AI systems are often the least transparent, and are controlled by a very small group of people Note, this does refer to AI and not just Gen AI. So how does this discussion come into the classroom? In my English classes, we always spent a lot of time looking at media from different angles (audience, intent, bias, subversion, etc), by positioning AI as a media, students can reveal latent prejudice in systems used by millions. Working with schools and classes, as well as my own meanderings and confusions on LinkedIn, our findings have mirrored breaking news and research coming out of prestigious journals. AI allows us to bring the following provocations into classrooms: ► Given a name or ethnicity, what kind of criminal profile do different AI systems write? What does this same about its categorization and racial profilings? How might this affect user experiences? What Are Job Alikes? Job Alikes create opportunities for educators in similar roles across various schools to come together. These events are dedicated to exchanging insights, addressing common challenges, and discovering strategies relevant to their work. The goal is to foster an environment of peer learning, networking, and professional advancement. How to Organise Online Job Alikes The approach to organising an online Job Alike varies with the group's size and the inclusion of a keynote speaker. Below are streamlined strategies for different scenarios... For Small Groups: Format: Promote a single session with open dialogue. Agenda: Welcome and Introductions: 10 minutes Discussion/Activity: 40 minutes on a specific topic Networking: 10 minutes For Large Groups: Format: Implement a structured setup with breakout rooms. Agenda: Welcome: 5 minutes Keynote or provocation discussion: 20 minutes Breakout Sessions: 30 minutes, by interest, by specific role if relevant Group Sharing: 15 minutes Networking: 10 minutes With a Keynote: A keynote adds value by providing insights and sparking discussions. Agenda is similar to large groups, with a focus on the keynote presentation. Without a Keynote: Start with a discussion to engage participants immediately. Agenda can be adjusted for group size, focusing on initial sharing and discussions. What's a Provocation Discussion? An example of a provocation discussion for educators might challenge them with a bold statement like, "Traditional classrooms are obsolete in the digital learning age," to stimulate debate and reflection on the impact of technology in education. This approach encourages sharing diverse viewpoints and experiences, deepening understanding among participants. Key Recommendations: Engagement: Use interactive tools like polls and whiteboards. Flexibility: Adapt the agenda based on feedback. Follow-Up: Summarise the session, share resources, and encourage networking. EdEvents Groups can make use of the online group features for continued discussion and sharing of resources after the meeting. This can also encourage new group members to take part in future meet ups, as they immediately see the community collaboration. By selecting the appropriate format, you can create a meaningful experience for educators, encouraging growth and community building.

A new community group MINDKORCS (Mindful Korean Schools), led by members of Korea Council of Overseas Schools (KORCOS), is about to launch on EdEvents! Organised and run by international educators in South Korea, the group's vision is to establish and maintain a strong, collaborative community of members committed to: promoting the knowledge and practice of mindfulness in school communities; creating a community of practice to support educators in their personal development of mindfulness skills and; producing a wide range of mindfulness teaching resources that educators can draw on. Whilst the focus of the group is initially on supporting those in Korea, all EdEvents members interested in creating mindful school communities are welcome to join and participate in the regular meetings. Join the group and activate the group notifications to keep in touch with this developing community. Hosting the online group on EdEvents will provide ongoing exposure within the wider international education community, with users of the platform making use of the various directories and over time discovering groups of interest such as MINDKORCS. The group will also be advertising their events and meetups on the main EdEvents directory.

The roll out of the Groups directory on the EdEvents Community aims to provide greater connection and opportunities for educators working across international schools, becoming a network that educators can benefit from in a professionally targeted platform. Each group will have a focus area, such as the recently launched Leadership Group, that will include an online discussion space, shared resources and regular online meetings. This will enable those working in the topic area within schools to have a space to connect with others, share ideas, highlight opportunities and generally have a professional learning network they can stay connected with regardless of moving schools. The most valuable aspect of these community groups is that they will bring together educators into the EdEvents Community for a wide range of topic areas, and thus maximise awareness of other community groups they may also like to participate in - and after joining EdEvents they can utilise the events, solutions, jobs and schools directories on the platform. "EdEvents aims to be the media space, the central hub, of the international education community. People may choose to visit the site for one of many reasons, and in doing so discover something else of value," said the founder and Managing Director of EdEvents, David Burke. "The key to the community groups coming on the platform is maximising the discovering of the different networking groups to connect with, rather than various communities existing separately in different platforms." "The collective value for educators increases as the community grows. So we're looking to really create maximum awareness of professional opportunities by bringing more and more people together. Basically, keep everyone in the loop," Burke said. The Leadership Group is holding the first live meeting this Thursday (Feb 15) targeting Middle Leaders, which will follow a Job-Alike format. The session will be facilitated by Jolene Lockwood and will provide those attending with the opportunity to connect live, discuss provocations, learn more about EdEvents and determine the direction of future sessions.
