An Introduction to the Compassionate Systems Framework

A pedagogical route to developing global citizenship in schools and supporting community wellbeing.

As part of a project inspired by the Centre for Systems Awareness; Dulwich College (Singapore) is joining with other institutions in the region to develop new ‘Compassionate Systems Practitioners’. Our workshop introduces this new and essential approach to teaching, providing participants with an essential overview of the approach as well as practical classroom skills that can be immediately applied in classrooms. The workshop is suitable for those with some understanding of the Compassionate Systems Framework or complete beginners. The workshop is highly interactive and delivered in a warm and friendly environment.

Why do we need Compassionate Systems?

Many of the current systems and structures of education are outdated and ill-suited to the challenges and complexities of the world we live in today. Schools seek to nurture the well-being of the members of their community while supporting students to think critically. We believe we need to adapt and work collaboratively. We need a different way of thinking about and 'doing' education.

In her provocation above for the ReimaginED Conference in Fremantle, Dr Mette Böll highlighted the need for structural change in schools to create outcomes that nurture individual, collective, and system well-being. The Compassionate Systems Framework encourages a holistic understanding of complex issues, using tools and practices that can support leaders, teachers, and students. This develops an understanding of broader contexts, systems and relationships between concepts.

The workshop will be led by Nicola Wilson (Compassionate Systems Lead Junior School)

and Jacob Martin (Deputy Head of College) both Master Practitioners with the Centre. The

workshop is highly interactive and is focused on the classroom tools and the development of

compassionate systems leadership. It includes contemplative practice, group work and reflection

time.
